Concrete Drainage Pipes to Remove Effluent
Concrete drainage pipes are commonly used to remove sewerage or effluent in cities and towns. There are many elements to the drainage pipe systems that need to be considered to remove effluent from homes and other buildings to appropriate sewerage treatment plants.
One of the most important of these elements is that the pipes need to be waterproof. Any leaks in the system can cause the effluent to discharge into the environment which will then become contaminated. A range of different waterproofing techniques are therefore applied to concrete drainage pipes.
The most popular waterproofing method is to simple paint the pipes with bitumen or tar to minimise the amount of corrosion that can take place simply by the effluent running through the pipes. However, other techniques need to be applied at the joins between the different sections of the pipes to prevent leaks from occurring in these weak spots.
Different types of sealants and adhesives are used in the joints of the concrete drainage pipes. The reason these are use instead of harder waterproofing elements such as cement is because they are more flexible. Concrete drainage pipes expand and contract due to temperature fluctuations as well as to shifts in the environment which could cause the joints to break. The movement of the effluent in the pipes also requires the joints to be slightly flexible to prevent cracks and breaks from occurring.
Concrete drainage pipes do not use pumps to remove effluent but instead employ a system of natural elements to draw away the sewerage such as gravity. The pipe systems are laid at an angle to allow the effluent to naturally flow away. In section where the effluent must move at an uphill gradient, the sewerage is literally pushed by the flow coming from behind.
